SCORES AND REVIEW
James Suckling 91/100
A juicy red with currants, herbs, oyster shell and some moss. It’s medium-bodied with creamy tannins and a flavorful finish. Poloshed and tight still, but starting to come around. Drink or hold.
Robert Parker 93/100
A pure expression of Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Villanoviana (closed in a wax capsule) is the top-shelf wine from this producer in Bolgheri. The wine offers a wide and unobstructed view onto the grape, with black fruit aromas that are followed by balsam herb, cola and grilled rosemary sprig. The wine opens to a dark and impenetrable appearance, and it shows the texture and grit needed for prolonged bottle aging. Fermentation was executed in cement, and the wine aged in French barrique for 18 months, followed by 12 months in the bottle. A mere 1,934 bottles were made.
James Suckling 92/100
A red with current and dried-herb character, such as thyme, following through to a medium body with firm tannins and a fresh finish. Better after 2022.
Robert Parker 92/100
A release of only 1,450 bottles, the 2017 Villanoviana is a solid expression of Cabernet Franc with jackhammer intensity. The peppery and vegetal aromas associated with this grape emerge from the bouquet. As you come back, the wine shows licorice, cola and oak spice. This hot and dry vintage delivers firm tannins that are better managed compared to many of its peers. Nonetheless, I would suggest pairing this big and bold wine with a thick cut of prime steak.
